The compact sensor size of the EOS APS-C cameras result in a useful 1.6x multiplier effect on the focal length of attached lenses. However this also makes it technically difficult to achieve a wide angle of view with traditional lenses.
Canon has responded by extending the EF lens range to include new wide angle EF-S lenses purpose built for these cameras. EF-S lenses (with the white mounting spot) will not fit conventional EOS cameras.
